JumpStart Inc. is pleased to announce that Joseph (Joe) Rich, JD, MBA, Managing Partner, at Cleveland Clinic Innovations, has joined its Board of Directors.

Joe is a distinguished leader in innovation strategy, venture development, and technology commercialization. With nearly two decades of experience driving enterprise-wide innovation programs, managing venture portfolios, and advancing regional economic development initiatives, he brings invaluable expertise to JumpStart’s mission.

In his role at Cleveland Clinic, Joe focuses on the strategic growth of enterprise-wide innovation programs, including investing in and exiting startup portfolio companies based on Cleveland Clinic intellectual property, administering state and federally funded programs, and leading efforts tied to the Cleveland Innovation District. He also leads Cleveland Clinic’s Ohio BioValidation Fund, which focuses on early-stage healthcare technology investments.

Joe has served as a board member and corporate officer for numerous Cleveland Clinic portfolio companies, including Centerline Biomedical, Cleveland Diagnostics, Enspire DBS, NeuroTherpia, Zehna Therapeutics, Abcon Therapeutics, and Method AI. He also chairs the Innovations Corporate Compliance Committee and is a voting member of Cleveland Clinic’s Enterprise Conflict of Interest Committee.

JumpStart Inc. Announces Leadership Transition and Appointment of Interim CEO

JumpStart Inc. today announced that Julie Jacono has informed the Board of Directors of her decision to step down as Chief Executive Officer after accepting a new leadership opportunity aligned with her passion for advancing innovation in the healthcare sector.

Since assuming the CEO role in December 2023, Julie has led the organization through a period of strategic evolution and operational strengthening. Under her leadership, JumpStart finalized a new strategic roadmap, achieved a balanced budget, and developed a strong executive leadership team, laying a strong foundation for the organization’s long-term growth and sustainability.

Effective August 4, 2025, the Board has appointed Lorne Novick as Interim CEO. Lorne brings a deep knowledge of JumpStart’s mission, operations, and stakeholder network, and will provide steady leadership through this period of transition.

“Successful businesses drive prosperity for the owner and their community, and JumpStart truly leads in its capability and commitment to providing entrepreneurs with what they need to succeed. Ohio Startups and Small Businesses Drive $1.7 Billion Economic Impact in 2024

JumpStart’s latest economic impact report reveals that in 2024, Ohio startups and small businesses generated over $1.7 billion in economic output. Prepared by Silverlode Consulting, the report details the vital role entrepreneurs play in the state’s economy by driving revenue and contributing significantly to state and local tax bases.

JumpStart is built on the belief that business activity is one of the strongest drivers of regional prosperity and sustainability. The organization’s closely connected ecosystem of partners, investors and experts enable entrepreneurs to gain the comprehensive support needed to overcome challenges and sharpen business skills.

“This year’s report showcases how tech startups and small businesses are powering economic growth across the state,” says JumpStart’s CEO Julie Jacono. “Ohio’s entrepreneurs are not only building businesses, but they’re also strengthening our communities. At JumpStart, we are dedicated to expanding access to opportunity so every entrepreneur, regardless of their background, can find the resources they need. When these companies succeed, so does Ohio.”

Additional findings from the 2024 report include:

10,702 jobs created or maintained supporting 7,069 households.
$906 million generated in wages.
$193 million contributed in federal taxes
$77 million contributed in state and local taxes.

The startups and small businesses included in this report are supported by JumpStart and its regional collaborators and community partners. Since 2010, these startups and small businesses have generated a cumulative $15 billion in economic activity.

JumpStart Inc. Announces New Board Chair Cindy Torres Essell, Following Leadership Transition

JumpStart Inc. today announced the appointment of Cindy Torres Essell as Chair of its Board of Directors, effective immediately. The transition follows the voluntary resignation of José Vasquéz, who has stepped down to pursue new opportunities in fund and venture development.

Vasquéz, a dedicated entrepreneur and longtime advocate for inclusive innovation, has served on the Board since 2017 and was appointed Chair in 2024. His decision to resign reflects his ongoing commitment to strong governance and his desire to focus fully on emerging opportunities in the venture ecosystem.

“José’s leadership has been instrumental in strengthening JumpStart’s regional presence and advancing our mission to drive economic vitality by connecting entrepreneurs to the opportunities and resources they need to succeed,” said Julie Jacono, CEO of JumpStart. “We are deeply grateful for his service and look forward to the continued impact of his work across Ohio and beyond.”

The JumpStart Board has appointed Cindy Torres Essell to succeed Vasquéz as Chair. A respected leader with a wealth of legal experience and deep expertise in human resource management and talent strategy, Essell currently serves as chief People Officer for Heinen’s Grocery Stores, a regional grocer headquartered in Cleveland. She has served on the Board since 2020. She has held key leadership positions, including Chair of the HR and Compensation Committee, the CEO Search Committee, and most recently, Vice Chair of the Board.

“Cindy brings a clear strategic vision, proven governance expertise, long term connections with the regional corporate community and a deep passion for inclusive economic development,” added Jacono. “Her leadership will be critical as we continue to scale our impact and deepen our work across the region.”

JumpStart launches Verizon Community Forward Learning Center at Cleveland State University

JumpStart is proud to announce the launch of the Verizon Community Forward Learning Center located at Cleveland State University (CSU), expanding access to cutting-edge technology and credentialing programs. This third center builds upon the successful model of two existing learning centers launched in partnership with JumpStart under the Verizon Community Forward initiative in 2022.

Located in CSU’s Julka Hall, the Community Learning Center has long provided free tutoring and support programs for K-12 students across the region. Now, leveraging JumpStart’s expertise and the momentum gained from operating technology-driven learning centers in Cleveland’s Clark-Fulton and Union-Miles neighborhoods, the Verizon Community Forward Learning Center at CSU will feature expanded resources to serve a broader audience, including college students, adult learners and local small business owners.
